Sweet Things anyone Can Enjoy On Any Eating Plan

Here's a interrogate from a coach colleague who is working her way clear of a few extra pounds: What sweets would be accepted after a meal for someone applying the South Beach advent to eating?

My unabridged advent to sweets regardless of the food plan one has chosen is this: buy the best and eat less.

Ice Indulgence

Products made using high potential ingredients are more satisfying than the economy variety. Is there any margarine or spread that comes close to the taste and texture of real butter? Can you love a Chips Ahoy the way you love homemade?

Having said that the interrogate still remains, what can we eat that's sweet?

What follows is my short list and it might come in handy at this time of year when sweets and customary goodies rule.

Here's an additional one tradition that rules; if you avoid having something sweet when you crave it, and it will not pass-as in "this too shall..." It simply gets stuffed and when the pressure of life or sweet cravings is turned up it will explode into what I like to call the "I just ate the whole box/bag/pint-no make that quart-and I have no idea why" tradition.

Go with your gut when it cries out for a morsel of love in the form of sugar. The world won't end as you know it and one serving won't make your butt look fat in that Santa suit.

Dark Chocolate-If you've been living in a cave then you won't have noticed the explosion of dark chocolate products everywhere. For you cave dwellers here is the short version of why. It has been discovered that dark chocolate contains fine anti-oxidants similar to those found in red wine. Flavanoids, as these antioxidants are called, are specifically helpful to the heart, contributing to lower blood pressure, flexible arterial walls and a reduced risk of clotting. The darker the chocolate the more "phenols" will be found in your chocolate of choice. If the chocolate has nuts all the better. Nuts add protein, vitamins, and fiber to your indulgence.

Chocolate dipped strawberries? Big yumm and you get the bonus of the berries' fiber, Vitamin C and other nutrients.

Not a chocolate fan? How about some velvety dried apricots. Or a dried fig? A few strips of preserved orange or grapefruit rind?

Had sufficient of fruit this morning? Low carb and no-sugar-added ice creams found in every large market never fail to satisfy the ole sweet tooth. My new find, no sugar added butter pecan drizzled with no sugar added maple syrup had me singing the praises of food scientists everywhere.

Another beloved at this time of year when it's chilly is no sugar added cocoa. I make it with water and splash in some half and half and sip it while watching the fire.

Tired of the "no this" and "non that"? Buy some prime ice cream and quantum out a portion. Come on folks do it once and you might be shocked at what a label quantum is compared to what a "damn-I've-been-good-and-my-kids-are-driving-me-crazy-I-just-gotta-have-it" quantum looks like. Wouldn't it be better to know what you are getting into before you've downed half the pint? Not so you can feel guilty but so you can frame the nutrition in for the day.

Buy one crème brulee from your local gourmand grocer and share it-with you! Eat half after evening meal tonight and desist it tomorrow for breakfast.

There is one thing you must do no matter what your pleasure-pay attention! Eating mindlessly either evening meal or dessert leads to weight loss sabotage and endless guilt. South Beach, Weight Watchers, Sonoma Diet and so on will only work if you bring your awareness to your choices.

Awareness also can mean more enjoyment of the things you've chosen so carefully.

Savor the flavor, texture, and some would say "sinful" aspects of your sweets. You may not believe in the view of sin but when you are moderately devouring a mini-cannoli from your beloved Italian bakery can't you just imagine what it's like in heaven?

When in Disneyland, Eat These Things

Breakfast. If you didn't eat before entering the park, stop at the Carnation Cafe on Main Street. Here you can get a jumbo coffee and sugar boost from the Giant Chocolate Muffins or the Cinnamon Rolls. There are other choices at the walk-up counter including fruit cups, yogurt, and bagels, but to me these 2 indulgences are quite worth the fat and the money (about each). Today is the day to say, "The heck with it, I'm on vacation!" and start your day with a hearty "Yummmmmm, you've got to try this".

Mid-Morning Snack. You're coming down off that sugar buzz and need something to tide you over til lunch. Head over to Adventureland for the Bengal Barbeque Kabobs. They're relatively salutary and very tasty. That protein will carry you straight through the next few rides and they're pretty low in fat, carbs, and even cost. Bon appetit!

Lunch. Your big decision here is, sit-down and be served or stand-up and order?

If you prefer to be waited on, your best bet is the Blue Bayou. Set inside the Pirates of the Carribbean, this restaurant's best offerings are their preeminent Monte Cristo Sandwich () and tasty crab cakes (). But their Louisiana-style menu has plenty of other choices. You won't get any bargains here but the ambiance is memorable.

Not in the mood for a sit-down lunch? Well if you're still in New Orleans square grab a Clam Chowder Bread Bowl from the Royal street Veranda. That's the kind of dish that's almost always satisfying. Or head back to Main street for the Carnation Cafe's Turkey Sandwich on Pretzel Bread with Mustard-Seed Mayo. Seeing for something the whole family can share? Make your way over to Tomorrowland and order a whole pizza from Pizza Port. Abbondanza!

Afternoon Snack. What, you're hungry again? Oh good me too. Let's get a Dole Whip In Adventureland outside the Tiki Room. It's a cold fruity pineapple-y thing that's perfect on a warm afternoon. Not a fruit fan? Unwrap a Mickey selected Ice Cream Bar from any ice cream stand colse to the park. They're not only cute, they're delicious. In the mood for something salty? Go to Big Thunder Mountain and look for the McDonald's French Fries cart. That should do it.

Dinner. We commonly head to downtown Disney for dinner, as by this time we've spent nearly 10 hours in Disneyland itself. But if you're planning to dine in the park, try the Blue Bayou (but know their preeminent Monte Cristo Sandwich isn't on the evening meal menu). Order the Blackened Chicken or Beef Short Ribs (about each) and chicken drumsticks for the kids (). And please don't miss their Warm Cookie dessert with Vanilla Ice Cream. Why stop eating now?
